A Resort-Inspired Pool Paradise in Webster Groves, MO
With a handful of landscape design upgrades, this backyard became a daily oasis designed for functional fun for an outdoors-loving family in Webster Groves, MO.
First on the list was a retaining wall and privacy plantings along the poolside, to add more functional space along the side of the already existing pool deck and slope. With the new retaining wall in place, we were free to begin planting Emerald Green Arborvitae Evergreens and native grasses along the pool’s edge to act as a natural privacy screen. In the photo below, you can see how this provides a “living wall” for sunbathing, swimming, and relaxing outside. The pool lounge chairs now face towards a linear “forest” of greenspace instead of a standard fence or the neighbors yard.
Gravel makes this pool edge space low maintenance with no need for mowing. This keeps the pool area tidier with less natural debris falling into the pool – meaning less pool skimming and more relaxation time! To continue the aesthetic of no-fuss natural beauty, we lined the winding outdoor pathway leading to the backyard with easy-to-care for shrubs and ornamental grasses.
A new outdoor lighting system we installed this spring illuminates the way for family, friends and pets! To complete the outdoor living space ahead of a summer of fun, we added an outdoor sound system that can be easily accessed from any smartphone device. The whole family can easily download the app and control the music and volume with just a few taps.
The homeowners brought their own sense of resort-inspired style to the pool lounge area, selecting colorful throw pillows and stylish outdoor furniture to turn a standard poolside into an at-home resort. Potted plants add even more color and eye-candy for pool visitors. If you look closely, you’ll spot a new garden bed strategically placed to hide pool utilities.
The landscape design now complements the surrounding large, well established trees. The outdoor space now feels like an extension of the home as an invitation place to relax, unwind or entertain. It’s hard to imagine that less than a year ago the surrounding pool space was totally bare and in need of some serious TLC (“before” photo below).
Landscape design is a custom process because every home and yard is unique. Low-maintenance designs are trending that feature materials, plants, and layouts that are easy to take care of and require less maintenance. Homeowners are moving away from formal gardens and are instead embracing a more natural, native-focused landscape design style. Find more outdoor inspiration here.
