A South City St. Louis Backyard Built for Family

Some of our favorite projects start with a simple wish. For one South City St. Louis family, it was a backyard their young kids could actually use.

What they had was an unused stretch of dirt. What they wanted was a place to play, gather and spend more time outside together. Over about two weeks, our team brought in a paver patio, a rock bed, pollinator-friendly plantings and fresh sod, all designed around how this family wants to live.

Here is a look at how it came together.

Where It Started: An Unused Dirt Yard

Before the project, the backyard was mostly bare dirt. It was not a space anyone wanted to spend time in, and it did not invite kids to run and play.

This is common in South City. Many homes have smaller, older lots where the backyard has been overlooked for years. The good news is that a modest footprint can become one of the most used rooms of the house with the right plan.

Designing Around How the Family Lives

Every decision in this yard came back to one question: how does this family want to spend their time outside?

With young kids, the answer was clear. They needed a soft, open area to play, a solid spot for the grown-ups to sit and gather, and something beautiful to look at along the way. They also wanted room to grow, with a firepit planned for later.

So instead of filling every corner, we focused on a few things done well, each with a job to do.

A Paver Patio for Everyday Gathering

The heart of the new space is a paver patio. It gives the family a clean, level place for chairs, a table and easy evenings outside, right next to where the kids play.

Pavers are a great fit for St. Louis backyards. They handle our freeze and thaw cycles well, they are easy to keep clean, and individual pieces can be repaired if needed. Most of all, they turn a patch of dirt into a space that feels finished and ready to use.

A Rock Bed for Texture and Easy Care

A rock bed adds structure to the yard and a natural change of texture between the patio, plants and lawn. It helps define each area so the space feels organized, not crowded.

Rock beds are also low maintenance, which matters for a busy family. Less time on upkeep means more time enjoying the yard.

Pollinator-Friendly Plantings

The plantings were chosen with pollinators in mind. That means color and life throughout the growing season, with bees and butterflies stopping by to visit.

For a family with young kids, a pollinator garden is more than pretty. It is a small, everyday nature lesson right outside the back door. It also supports the local ecosystem here in St. Louis, one backyard at a time.

Fresh Sod for Room to Play

The biggest change for the kids is the lawn. New sod replaced the bare dirt with soft, green grass that is ready for running, tumbling and backyard games.

Sod gives an instant result. Instead of waiting months for seed to fill in, the family had a usable lawn almost right away.

From Dirt to Done in About Two Weeks

The full project took about two weeks from start to finish. In that time, the yard went from unused dirt to a complete outdoor space with a patio, rock bed, plantings and lawn.

A clear plan up front is what makes a timeline like this possible. When the design is built around how a family wants to live, the install can move with confidence.

What’s Next: A Firepit for Cooler Evenings

This backyard was designed to grow with the family. Their next step is adding a firepit, a perfect fit for fall nights and s’mores with the kids.

Building in phases is a smart way to create an outdoor space you love. You start with the essentials and add features as your family’s needs change.
