What It Looked Like Before
The old patio wasn’t just outdated, it was actively working against the family who owned it. Settled concrete had created uneven, tripping-hazard edges. Drainage was poor, so the space stayed damp longer than it should have after rain. And there was no real structure to the yard beyond the patio itself; no defined planting beds, no lighting, no privacy, nothing that made the space feel like it was designed for actual living.
It’s a common story in Town and Country and across St. Louis: a backyard that technically has a patio, but doesn’t have an outdoor life. Our job was to change that.
A Full Outdoor Living Renovation, Start to Finish
This wasn’t a single-service project. It was a full backyard renovation that touched almost every element of the outdoor space:
Patio demolition and removal. We started by fully removing the old, failing concrete patio, clearing the way for a space that could actually support the family’s day-to-day life outside.
Stamped patio installation. In its place, a new stamped patio gives the space a clean, upscale foundation, durable enough for years of dinners, birthday parties, and quiet Sunday mornings with coffee.
Retaining wall. To manage the grade change and give the yard real structure, we built a retaining wall that doubles as definition between the patio and the surrounding landscape, and adds a bit of natural seating along the edge.
Landscape lighting. Path lights and accent lighting mean the space doesn’t shut down when the sun does. Fall afternoons turn into fall evenings without anyone needing to head inside.
Irrigation. A new irrigation system keeps the plantings and fresh sod healthy without adding one more chore to the family’s list.
Plantings. Layered plant beds soften the hardscape and give the yard color and texture through every season, not just summer.
Fencing. New fencing adds privacy and a sense of enclosure, turning the backyard into a space that feels like its own retreat rather than an open extension of the neighborhood.
Sod installation. Fresh sod replaced the patchy, worn-out lawn, giving the family (and their kids) actual usable green space for the first time in years.
Each piece supports the others. The retaining wall makes the grading work. The lighting makes the evenings usable. The irrigation keeps the sod and plantings looking as good in year three as they do today. That’s the difference between a project that’s just a patio replacement and one that’s a real outdoor living renovation.
Why It’s the Perfect Spot for Fall Afternoons
Fall is a strange season for a lot of St. Louis backyards. The weather is finally comfortable enough to be outside constantly, but a lot of yards aren’t built for it: no lighting for when it gets dark early, no defined seating, no shelter from the wind coming through an open, unfenced yard.
This space solves all of that. The stamped patio gives everyone solid, comfortable footing for folding chairs and a fire pit. The retaining wall creates a natural gathering spot. The fencing cuts the wind and adds privacy, so it feels like a retreat instead of a yard that’s technically outside but doesn’t feel separate from the street. And the lighting means a Tuesday afternoon can turn into a Tuesday evening without anyone needing to pack up and go inside.
It’s also, very intentionally, a family space. The new sod gives kids room to actually run around instead of dodging bare patches and edging. The plant beds are placed to leave open sightlines from the patio, so parents can keep an eye on things while they’re relaxing. Nothing about the design asks a family to choose between “nice” and “usable.” It’s both.
