Watering Guide for Aeration & Overseeding
You just gave your lawn a fresh start. Aeration opens up the soil so air, water, and nutrients can reach the roots, and overseeding fills in thin or bare patches with new grass. Now the most important part begins: watering.
The first few weeks after aeration and overseeding make or break your results. Here’s how to keep everything on track.
Week 1-3: Keep the Soil Consistently Damp
Once your seed is down, plan to water your lawn every day if it isn’t raining. The goal is to keep the soil consistently damp, not soggy, all the way down into the seedbed.
- No rain? Water daily. Grass seed can’t germinate in dry soil.
- Hot and dry weather? You may need to water more than once a day, since the soil dries out faster.
- How much is enough? Water until the seedbed is damp all the way through, not just on the surface.
A light sprinkle won’t cut it. Shallow watering keeps roots shallow too, and that makes for a weaker lawn down the road.
When to Mow Again
Once your new grass reaches about 3 inches tall, it’s time for the first mow.
- Set your mower to its highest setting.
- Only remove about 1 inch of grass at a time.
- Keep watering consistently and continue mowing as needed.
- Repeat this cycle until you’ve mowed the lawn at least three times.
By the third mow, the roots should be well established and your lawn will be much more resilient to normal watering schedules and everyday wear.
A Few Extra Tips
- Water early morning or evening. Watering in the heat of the day loses more water to evaporation.
- Check the soil, not just the calendar. If it’s still damp below the surface, you can hold off. If it’s dry, water sooner rather than later.
- Stay consistent. Skipping even a day or two during germination can undo weeks of progress.
Have an Irrigation System?
If your system is handling the watering, make sure it’s calibrated for this stage. Newly seeded lawns need more frequent, lighter watering than an established lawn, and your regular irrigation schedule may not be set up for that. Quiet Village offers irrigation system assessments to make sure your setup is actually supporting your new seed instead of working against it.
